WHAT IS DEHYDRATION?
Dehydration occurs when your body lacks enough water and essential salts (electrolytes) to carry out its normal functions. In a tropical climate like Bali, your body uses sweat to cool down, but if those fluids aren’t replaced quickly, your organs, muscles, and brain can suffer.
CAUSES & RISK FACTORS
Several factors in Bali can accelerate fluid loss:
-
Extreme Heat & Humidity: High temperatures cause excessive sweating.
-
Alcohol Consumption: Cocktails and beer are diuretics, meaning they make you lose fluids faster.
-
Traveler’s Diarrhea (Bali Belly): Vomiting and diarrhea are the leading causes of rapid, severe dehydration.
-
Physical Activity: Surfing, hiking Mount Batur, or even long walks in the sun.
-
Caffeine: Too many iced coffees can contribute to fluid loss.
SYMPTOMS TO WATCH FOR
Dehydration ranges from mild to severe. Recognize the signs early:
-
Mild to Moderate: Extreme thirst, dry mouth, dark yellow or strong-smelling urine, and headache.
-
Physical Cues: Feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or unusually tired.
-
Severe Signs: Sunken eyes, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and fainting.
-
The “Pinch Test”: If you pinch the skin on the back of your hand and it doesn’t “snap” back instantly, you are likely dehydrated.
INITIAL TREATMENT: HOW TO RECOVER
If you start feeling the effects of the sun, take action immediately:
-
Sip, Don’t Gulp: Drink small amounts of water or oral rehydration salts (ORS) frequently.
-
Electrolytes are Key: Water alone isn’t enough if you’ve lost minerals. Drink coconut water or sports drinks.
-
Seek Shade: Get out of the sun and into an air-conditioned or fan-cooled room.
-
Medical IV Therapy: When dehydration is caused by Bali Belly or heatstroke, drinking water might not be enough (or you might be too nauseous to drink). IV Hydration is the fastest way to deliver fluids and electrolytes directly into your bloodstream for near-instant recovery.
PREVENTION: STAY AHEAD OF THE THIRST
-
The 8-Glass Rule+: In Bali, aim for more than 2 liters of water a day, especially if you are active.
-
Eat Hydrating Foods: Enjoy Bali’s fresh fruits like watermelon, papaya, and cucumbers.
-
Limit Mid-Day Sun: Stay in the shade between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM when the sun is strongest.
-
Monitor Your Urine: Aim for a “pale straw” color. If it’s dark, start drinking water immediately!
