Dengue Fever in Bali: Symptoms, Risk & Prevention

Dengue Fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, as detailed in the WHO’s fact sheet on dengue and severe dengue. In Bali, cases can occur year-round but often spike during the rainy season. It is often called “breakbone fever” because of the severe joint and muscle pain it can cause.

Causes & Risk Factors

  • The Vector: The primary cause is the Dengue virus (DENV), spread by mosquitoes that bite mostly during the day (early morning and before dusk).
  • Stagnant Water: Mosquitoes breed in clean, still water found in flower pots, buckets, or discarded containers around villas.
  • Tropical Environment: Lush gardens and proximity to rice fields or jungles increase the likelihood of mosquito presence.
  • Peak Season: Higher risk during the transition from the dry season to the rainy season (typically October to April).

Recognizing the Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear 4–10 days after being bitten. Look out for:

  • Sudden High Fever: Often reaching 40°C (104°F).
  • Severe Headache: Particularly pain behind the eyes.
  • Body Aches: Intense muscle and joint pain.
  • Skin Rash: A flat, red rash that may appear 2–5 days after the fever starts.
  • Nausea & Vomiting: Feeling generally unwell and losing appetite.

Initial Treatment & Management

There is no specific “cure” for Dengue, so treatment focuses on managing symptoms and getting the Dengue Vaccine (Qdenga):

  • Hydration is Critical: Drink plenty of fluids (water, electrolytes, or coconut water) to prevent dehydration — see our guide to Dehydration in Bali for the warning signs.
  • Pain Relief: Use Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) to manage fever. Important: Avoid Aspirin or Ibuprofen (NSAIDs), as these can increase the risk of bleeding in Dengue cases.
  • Blood Monitoring: It is vital to get a Full Blood Count (FBC/CBC) test to monitor your platelet levels.
  • Professional Care: For severe weakness or high fever, Medical IV Therapy can help maintain hydration levels and support your immune system during recovery.

Prevention: How to Protect Yourself

  • Use Repellent: Apply mosquito repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, or IR3535 consistently.
  • Wear Protective Clothing: Opt for long-sleeved shirts and long pants, especially if trekking or visiting inland areas.
  • Secure Your Villa: Keep screen doors closed and use mosquito coils or electric mats in your room.
  • Eliminate Standing Water: Ensure there is no stagnant water around your living area where mosquitoes can breed.
  • Get Vaccinated: Ask about the Dengue vaccine (Qdenga) if you’ll be in Bali long-term or during peak season.
