Swimmer’s Ear in Bali: Causes, Treatment & Prevention

There is nothing like a refreshing dip in a Bali villa pool or a long session catching waves at Old Man’s. But if your ear starts to feel blocked, itchy, or painful after being in the water, you might have a common condition known as Swimmer’s Ear. Don’t let ear pain keep you away from the beach—here is how to handle it.

WHAT IS SWIMMER’S EAR?

Swimmer’s Ear, medically known as Otitis Externa, is an inflammation or infection of the outer ear canal. This is the tube that runs from your outside ear to the eardrum. It often occurs when water stays trapped in the ear canal, creating a moist environment that encourages bacteria or fungi to grow.

CAUSES & RISK FACTORS

While anyone can get it, certain factors in Bali make it more likely:

  • Trapped Moisture: Water staying in the ear after swimming or surfing.

  • High Humidity: Bali’s tropical climate prevents the ear canal from drying out naturally.

  • Contaminated Water: Bacteria found in some pools or ocean water can trigger an infection.

  • Cleaning Habits: Using cotton buds (Q-tips) can scratch the delicate skin of the ear canal or push wax deeper, trapping bacteria.

  • Narrow Ear Canals: Some people naturally have smaller canals that trap water more easily.

SYMPTOMS TO WATCH FOR

Swimmer’s Ear symptoms usually start mild but can worsen if not treated:

  • Itching: An annoying itch deep inside the ear canal.

  • Pain: Discomfort that gets worse when you pull on your outer ear or push on the little “bump” in front of your ear.

  • Fullness: A feeling that your ear is “clogged” or underwater.

  • Discharge: Clear, odorless fluid or pus draining from the ear.

  • Muffled Hearing: Temporary hearing loss due to swelling or blockage.

INITIAL TREATMENT & CARE

If you suspect an infection, act quickly to prevent the pain from becoming severe:

  • Keep it Dry: Avoid swimming or getting water in your ear while it is healing. Use a shower cap when bathing.

  • Avoid Cotton Buds: Never stick anything inside your ear, as this will worsen the inflammation.

  • Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers can help with the initial throbbing.

  • Medical Ear Drops: Most cases require Antibiotic or Antifungal ear drops prescribed by a doctor. Because the ear canal is narrow, a doctor may need to clean the ear professionally so the drops can reach the infection.

PREVENTION: STAY IN THE WATER, STAY SAFE

  • Dry Your Ears: After swimming, tilt your head to each side to let water drain out. Use a soft towel to dry the outer ear.

  • Use Earplugs: If you are prone to infections, wear high-quality silicone earplugs while swimming or surfing.

  • The Hairdryer Trick: Use a hairdryer on the lowest, coolest setting, held at arm’s length, to gently dry the canal.

  • Avoid “Home Remedies”: Avoid putting vinegar or alcohol in your ear if you suspect your eardrum might be damaged.
